Clean the Bathrooms

It does matter.

It does matter.  We often get so caught up in staff training, program

registrations, preparing program areas and starting our summer, that this very simple item can be missed. It only takes a few moments, a few times a day and anyone on your staff team can learn how to do it.

Attend to the camp bathroom more than once a day.

Attend to the camp bathroom more than once a day.  Cleaning the bathroom in the morning and waiting to clean it again tomorrow is not enough.  You may only need to do a deep clean once a day, but another few stops throughout the day to pick up trash and lost and found items, wipe down surfaces and make sure that everything looks nice will make a difference.

All camp bathrooms need to be at their optimum cleanliness before check in starts.

Everyone prefers a clean bathroom.  Especially parents.  All camp bathrooms need to be at their optimum cleanliness before check in starts.  They should be checked regularly to be sure they are kept looking nice throughout the check in process.  PArents want to know that their campers will be using clean facilities.  First day impressions make a difference.  Poor impressions on the first day are challenging to overcome.

Keeping facilities clean and well kept, teaches respect for facilities and property.

Campers and staff will take better care of a clean bathroom.  Keeping facilities clean and well kept, teaches respect for facilities and property.  It’s the opposite of the broken window effect.  If you see an old building with broken windows, it is more tempting to throw a rock and break another window.  However, if a building - or bathroom in this case- is cleaned and maintained, you are less likely to make a mess or treat the facility poorly.

Campers can help pick up trash, sweep pick up lost and found as well as a way to learn shared responsibilities in a community.

Having summer staff of all positions help be responsible for clean bathrooms will help encourage them to keep the bathrooms cleaner.  Campers can help pick up trash, sweep pick up lost and found as well as a way to learn shared responsibilities in a community.  Toilet cleaning, chemicals and anything gross should be left to staff though.

Your expectations need to meet or exceed parent expectations.

Your expectations need to meet or exceed parent expectations.

Dirty bathrooms are not healthy and are less comfortable to use.  Little things make a difference in a camper's experience. Anything within reason that we can do to make them feel more comfortable and safe needs to be considered a priority. Clean bathrooms are within reason.
