Summer Camp is full of significant moments and experiences. Join Sherry Group members, Drew Demery and David Sherry as they speak with Jeanne Muellerleile about couple amazing camp experiences.
Jeanne thank you for being on the podcast, it's a pleasure to have you on this episode. Can you please share with us a meaningful experience from your own camping career?
A few years ago I had a unique situation arise with a really cool camper. He was a bit older, very fashionable, full of character and had a great vocabulary. My camp serves special needs individuals and it was always a pleasure when this particular campers would return each summer.
Well one day as I was walking home I came across this camper looking in the windows of my house. I jokingly asked if he was snooping and he replied, "oh no no no, I was just glancing." And it cracked me up! He wasn't just glancing but for him to have the nuance to say that just made my day. So I invited him and we took a tour of the house. He absolutely loved it.
Another cool story is one of a previous staff member. She was a bit timid about leading some activities with campers and so I offered her some support, like I would any staff member who just needed a little encouragement. She went on to be a great staff member for us and really didn't need much of my support to be honest. Well a little bit after I retired she sent me a long letter saying thank you for that bit of encouragement and that now she had been recognized as a leader in her own community. It felt really great to be a small part of her journey and have her say thanks in such a special way.
Thanks for joining us Jeanne, it's been a real pleasure.
